KARUR, MARCH 15 . The Karur town police have arrested two persons and recovered stolen gold jewellery worth over Rs.two lakhs and Rs.35,000 in cash from them.
With the arrests, the police claim to have solved a series of theft cases in the district.
The police were on the look-out for the culprits who stole about 18 sovereigns of old jewellery from the house of P. Jayalakshmi of East Nanjappa Street here last year.
Investigations revealed the hand of K. Azhagu alias Periasamy of Rasipuram and T. Murugan of Sankagiri. A special team led by the Town Deputy Superintendent of Police, Muthusamy, tracked down the duo and secured them today.
Interrogation of the two culprits led to the unravelling the mystery behind six other theft cases in Karur district.
The duo acknowledged its involvement in several cases of theft and, interestingly, from the booty took a piece of agricultural land and a house on lease from Chinnappa Gounder of Sadayampalayam near here. They have been carrying on agriculture there for the past one year.
The police recovered from the duo Rs. 35,000 in cash, gold jewellery worth Rs.two lakhs, a television set and a VCD among other things.
The arrested were produced before the Judicial Magistrate I, Murugadoss, who remanded them to 15 days custody. The Superintendent of Police, Sandeep Mittal, appreciated the special team members who effected the arrest and the subsequent recovery of stolen property.
